Zimmerman School

17901 Carter Road, Bowling Green, Ohio

The Zimmerman School, located north of Bowling Green at the intersection of Nelson and Carter Roads, is a one room schoolhouse built in 1892.  Over time the school had become run down and virtually ruined, until the late John Zimmerman, who's mother and grandmother had taught at the school, bought it and lovingly restored the structure to it's original form.  Renovations not only included the exterior of the historic building, but the interior as well, right down to the authentic period furnishings.

In 1992, the Park District sponsored a centennial celebration, offering the public the opportunity to see the school first hand, complete with presentations by people in period costumes telling tales of the School in it's prime.  The opening was a huge success, with all in attendance thoroughly enthused at the prospects of the Zimmerman One Room School.

In March of 1993, the Park District accepted the donation of the Zimmerman School by Eleanor Zimmerman.

In a cooperative effort, the Park District and the Wood County Board of Education have developed a plan for maintenance of the site and the provision of living history programming.  This program includes the opportunity for Wood County students to step back in time and experience a day in the life of a student in 1892.

All who have participated in the program, students and teachers alike, agree it is a huge success and one which will be a valuable learning tool.  In addition, the Park District program staff also offers a variety educational programs at the School.

Teachers who would like to reserve the school for their classrooms should call Park District Headquarters at (419) 353-1897.

The Mission of Wood County Park District is to preserve, protect, enhance and interpret
